CVU rowers triumph at Icebreaker regatta

CVU winter sports began their preparations for the regular season by playing a number of scrimmages to get teams and bodies in order. The regular season begins later this month.
For men’s and women’s soccer teams, the friendly confines of UVM’s Buck Hard Field proved once again that the Redhawks of both genders were best in the state.
It was the perfect crisp, fall day for a football game. Top-seeded St. Albans Steelers and the second-seeded Chittenden South Buccaneers arrived at Essex High School in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 2, to warm up for what was sure to be an impressive show of football.
CVU is no longer just soccer central
There was a time not too far back when CVU was titled “Soccer Central” for its domination in that fall sport. Well, lo and behold, soccer domination has spread to other sports.
If you wonder where CVU High School’s excellence in cross-country running begins, you need look no further than the middle-school teams in the district. Charlotte, Shelburne and Williston have proven their mettle in recent races.
After taking a hard hit from Rutland in its opening season game under new coach, Rahn Fleming, the Redhawks recuperated and came back for a week-two win over Mount Mansfield, 27-18. Charlotte’s Seth Boffa seemed to be the running back of choice as he made up for a fourth-quarter fumble to score the final touchdown for CVU, which assured the victory. Angelos Carroll set up Seth’s run by sneaking under several tacklers, and with a minute left in the game, Seth broke through another several defenders to score. It was his second TD of the game. Ryan Canty was active defensively, particularly in the second half when it counted most. He forced the MMU quarterback to scramble and miss his passes on several occasions.
Whether the soccer pitch, the cross-country trails, the football field, field hockey field or the volleyball court, there have been Redhawks all over them in the last week. Fall sports have finished preseason warm ups and are into league games. Last weekend gave spectators some insight into what to expect this year.
Rahn Fleming has taken over the reins of the Champlain Valley Union high school football team after nearly 20 years as junior varsity coach and teacher at the institution (including commencement speaker and parent of two CVU grads, Konner and Ryan, both whom played college football at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.). Rahn, a California native, attended Dartmouth, graduating in 1981.
The Lake Champlain Championship Series is a summer-long series of sailboat races to determine the top competitors in six different categories, held in various spots on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
Going into the final double header against Brattleboro, S.D. Ireland needed only to win one to advance to the Northeast Regional Tournament. They did not manage it, falling 9-6 in the opener and 5-2 in the second game.
Thanks in large measure to CVU goalkeeper Aiden Johnson’s first-half solidity in the net, the Vermont men held on to a 2-0 win behind a goal in the first half from Harwood’s Will Lapointe in the 45th Twin-State soccer contest for men.
Shortly after they won the Division I state baseball championship, many CVU players put on their S.D. Ireland uniforms and turned immediately to American Legion ball.
From Gatorade to the baseball diamond, lacrosse pitch, track and field and tennis court, the Redhawk spring athletes have distinguished themselves.
Ben Novak, an eight-year-old medal-winning basketball player, is confident in his skills on the court. “I threw it in the hoop!” he said with pride, then amended it with, “Well, I almost did.” The Charlotte athlete participated in the basketball skills portion of the Vermont Special Olympics at the University of Vermont Patrick Gymnasium on June 8 and 9.
