So, you can end the season coming in at second place for men and second place for women and still win the overall state championship. This happened to CVU’s Alpine ski teams. The women finished second in their two-day event in early March, behind Mount Mansfield Union. Redhawk Becca Provost was the top individual finisher in the slalom race at Burke Mountain.

Burton boards conquer Korea – Watching the Olympic half-pipe runs Wednesday night, it appeared that nearly every snowboard doing flips high above the pipe had “BURTON” written on the underside. This could easily have been preceded by “Jason” or “Grant” (Garvey or Manning), two Charlotte natives who contributed a great deal to the board designs. Grant’s cousin “Thunder” from North Ferrisburgh is also a Burton designer, and among the three of them, they play a lead role in generating snowboards for some of the world’s top riders.

Machavern starts the year on a winning note – Charlotte racecar driver Dillon Machavern began where he left off last season, which is in the winner’s circle of the BMW Endurance Challenge at Daytona International Speedway. Dillon and co-driver Spencer Pumpelly led for 45 laps and crossed the finish line 7.1 seconds ahead of the second-place duo. This was significant because a pit stop and driver change on the 83rd  lap dropped them from second place to eighteenth.
