Redhawk cross country looking for 10 state titles in a row – While the Free Press seems often to focus on athletes other than cross-country runners, it might do well to take a glance at Coach Scott Bliss’s minions as they travel around Vermont, New England and upstate New York.
It’s back to school season once again! And this week I’ve been thinking about the past 10 years I’ve spent at Charlotte Central School. All the way back in 2008 I walked down the hallways of the CCS basement to begin my school career. I remember being so nervous as a little three-year-old starting preschool for the first time, but all the memories I have from that time in my life are good ones.
On August 29, Charlotte Central School will be welcoming students back for the 2018-2019 school year. Teachers and staff members are looking forward to getting to know several new students and families joining our CCS community.

Winter sports close; spring sports open – Looking out at my snow-covered lawn, it’s hard to believe that winter is over and spring has sprung. However, I pick up the newspaper each day and read the lacrosse, tennis and track scores, countered by the lists of winter sports’ all-stars. The transition from season-to-season this year seems rapid. Let’s begin with all-stars from CVU.
One might argue that being a principal (or an educator in any capacity) during this time is challenging, to say the least. In the weeks since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, CCS, along with other schools across America, has grappled with how to respond to the most recent acts of threats and violence in American schools. Despite the amazing amount of work that has been done to implement greater measures of safety in our schools, we have once again been catapulted into an acute need to respond in a way that takes care of all of our students, teachers and staff members.
On February 14, 2018, there was a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen lives were taken and 17 more people were injured. On March 10, administrators at Charlotte Central School sent an email to the school community that said that awareness and interest had grown from middle school students about the walk-outs held across the country.
A total of $185 was raised throughout the 2016-17 school year at Charlotte Central School through its “Be the Change” program. The school received the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) Youth Hero Award for that effort, which will be presented at a school assembly on Nov. 17.
Congratulations: to Charlotte resident and Middlebury physician Dr. Jeanne Andersson-Swayze who, as a member of Heart to Heart International’s Disaster Response Team, went to both Florida in September and Puerto Rico recently to give medical aid to storm victims. Her team in Puerto Rico headed inland to small and often remote towns.
