Vermont’s high school football coaches selected all-star teams recently.
It was not that long ago when CVU was known as “Soccer Central” and football did not exist at the high school level.
As the air becomes cooler and the leaves begin to fall, so too the Major League Baseball season comes to an end. For the Red Sox who are, at the moment, 89-69 (20 games over the .500 mark), this season was a huge turnaround from the 2020 campaign, in which the Sox were only 24-36.
Football, soccer and cross country running are all in play as the fall sports season begins.
This year’s Maple Sugar Bowl is carved in granite. Played Saturday at Castleton University, New Hampshire ran the 68th bowl game into the ground and shut out Vermont 21-0.
This fall’s Redhawk athletes exhibited quite a mix of cheers and groans. Both soccer teams led the groans as the men lost to Essex in overtime in the Division I semi-finals and the top-ranked CVU women were upset by South Burlington with a late-game goal in the state finals to give the Wolves a 2-1 win.
I have memories of two types of rituals for this holiday. The first revolves around football; the second revolves around food. In this issue of The News I’ll tell you about how in Green Bay, Wisconsin, football rules the roost on Thanksgiving. I will get into food next time.
The past weekend marked the beginning of high school sports in Vermont as they have seldom been seen.
Cross-country runners, soccer and field hockey players, the new-style football teams all broke the practice ice recently. To look at CVU’s array of fields and the athletes preparing their skills on each one, a person may have thought nothing was affected by the pandemic.
CVU men golfers traveled to Pinehurst, North Carolina, the first week of this month for the National High School Invitational Tournament. Led by Alex Leonard, the Redhawk swingers placed 23rd out of 27 teams overall.
It has been a year since summer high school baseball has seen the diamond through a traditional American Legion season. This year’s season was cancelled in April due to the spread of the coronavirus.
CVU is no longer just soccer central
There was a time not too far back when CVU was titled “Soccer Central” for its domination in that fall sport. Well, lo and behold, soccer domination has spread to other sports.
If you wonder where CVU High School’s excellence in cross-country running begins, you need look no further than the middle-school teams in the district. Charlotte, Shelburne and Williston have proven their mettle in recent races.
After taking a hard hit from Rutland in its opening season game under new coach, Rahn Fleming, the Redhawks recuperated and came back for a week-two win over Mount Mansfield, 27-18. Charlotte’s Seth Boffa seemed to be the running back of choice as he made up for a fourth-quarter fumble to score the final touchdown for CVU, which assured the victory. Angelos Carroll set up Seth’s run by sneaking under several tacklers, and with a minute left in the game, Seth broke through another several defenders to score. It was his second TD of the game. Ryan Canty was active defensively, particularly in the second half when it counted most. He forced the MMU quarterback to scramble and miss his passes on several occasions.
Whether the soccer pitch, the cross-country trails, the football field, field hockey field or the volleyball court, there have been Redhawks all over them in the last week. Fall sports have finished preseason warm ups and are into league games. Last weekend gave spectators some insight into what to expect this year.
Rahn Fleming has taken over the reins of the Champlain Valley Union high school football team after nearly 20 years as junior varsity coach and teacher at the institution (including commencement speaker and parent of two CVU grads, Konner and Ryan, both whom played college football at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.). Rahn, a California native, attended Dartmouth, graduating in 1981.
Both boys and girls Charlotte cross-country running teams placed second in the Shelburne Farms races last Wednesday, behind Shelburne. Six schools from the area sent runners. The top individuals for CCS were Owen Deale who won the boys’ race and Ethan Morris who placed third. Kate Kogut in third and Libby Manning in seventh were CCS high finishers among girls.
Shelburne Little League baseball team to appear on Red Sox pre-game show – The Storm, Shelburne’s Little League baseball team, will appear live from Fenway Park before the Red Sox game with the Cleveland Indians on the NESN Clubhouse on August 26 at 11:30 a.m.
With the seasons winding down, CVU spring sports have produced a couple of bumper crops among their teams. Women’s tennis stands out, having won all but one match by set scores of 7-0. The one match that did not measure up to perfection was, nonetheless, a 6-1 win over St. Johnsbury in the middle of last month. Senior Stephanie Joseph follows in her older sister Kathy’s footsteps as the number one singles player for the Redhawks (and, perhaps, the best in the state).
The CVSD Buccaneers president Chris Boffa fills us in on what this football team is up to at the start of the season.
