On Sunday, May 5, Philo Ridge Farm hosted a family-friendly fundraiser for The Charlotte News. That is, not The Citizen, as Vince Crockenberg, president of the board, made clear.“We are not this paper,” he told the sizable crowd, holding up the latest edition of the for-profit paper, The Citizen.
Transition Town Charlotte is hosting their community Repair Café at Champlain Valley Union High School (CVU) on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All attendees are asked to preregister at transitioncharlottevt.org.
What a wonderful evening at Philo Ridge Farm on May 5—sunny day, big crowd, great music and a spectacular venue. All of us here at The Charlotte News would like to thank owners Peter Swift and Diana McCargo, as well as our hosts for the day, Meriwether Hardie and Tad Cooke, for inviting the community to the Farm as a way to support the paper. The tours were special (the sheep!) and the food was exceptional. By the way, the farm market is now officially open for the summer season from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
Life and work as an artist can be solitary; talking to an artist about her work can be intimidating. The Vermont Crafts Council’s Open Studio Weekend aims to bridge that gap around the State of Vermont, allowing artists to open their work spaces to the public and allowing people to visit and speak to artists in their natural habitats.
For years the Charlotte Grange Hall has sat rather stately, but pretty dormant, at 2858 Spear Street in the East Charlotte Village. Last fall the membership voted to keep the Hall open over the winter and to host at least one event a month throughout the fall and winter.

I had the privilege to speak to the Shelburne-Charlotte-Hinesburg Rotary last week. It was so much fun, such a lovely surprise to go behind the scenes, if you will, at an organization I’ve known of forever and never had a clue what it was or what its purpose is.
The Lewis Creek Association will host a free screening of Toxic Puzzle: Hunt for the Hidden Killer, a documentary about scientist Dr. Paul Cox’s team investigating linkages between toxins produced by blue-green algae and the neurodegenerative diseases ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Discussion will follow with UVM scientists Jon Erickson, Ph.D and Dr. Rachelle Gould highlighting their research on blue-green algae found in Vermont lakes.

Carrie Spear created this annual event 18 years ago, and it has grown over time to the point where tractor drivers come from around New England and New York to display their old and new vehicles to over a thousand observers along Spear Street.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Charlotte Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services welcomes the public for a day of fun and education for all ages. Residents of Charlotte and neighboring towns are invited to visit with public safety providers from a variety of organizations, watch live demonstrations that will include CPR, vehicle extrication, fire demonstrations, and much more.
About 70 people turned out to enjoy live music, great food, neighborhood camaraderie and the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new underpass under Route 7 on the Charlotte Town Link Trail. Charlotters of all ages arrived by foot and by bike to participate in the grand opening. Laurie Thompson, co-chair of the Trails Committee, Lane Morrison, chair of the Selectboard, and Clark Hinsdale, who initiated the idea of the underpass with the State of Vermont many years ago, all spoke at the ceremony before the ribbon cutting. Several local farms and businesses donated food for the event.
