Food Shelf News – Sept. 19, 2019

The Food Shelf is again teaming up with the Grange in a winter-wear drive. We will take any winter wear that is gently used: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, warm pajamas, socks, sweaters. You name it—we can put it to very good use for children. Items can be dropped off any time at the Charlotte Library or at the Grange during the rummage sale drop off times the first week in October. Watch for posts on Front Porch Forum for specific times. For newbies in town, the Grange is located at 2898 Spear Street.

Food Shelf News – July 25, 2019

We encourage children and youth to pick up a tasty and healthy lunch bag, available at the Charlotte Congregational Church, Spear’s Corner Store and the Charlotte Library. Kudos to the people preparing these bags. Clearly, they put a lot of research into the contents, finding things that will keep without refrigeration, things that are healthful, and things that kids will like. Here’s what a sample lunch bag contains: organic juice drink, Goldfish, Cup Noodles, Vermont Beef & Pork stick, packaged pear bits with juice, granola bar.

Well, we all knew it was coming. High 70s last week and some snow in the forecast for this week.
The bounty from the “year of the tomato” needs to be put away. Sauces, freezer, dehydrating or wall paper. Lots of other veggies as well. What a bounty. Don’t forget the Charlotte Food Shelf.

An eating adventure in Lake Tahoe

An eating adventure in Lake Tahoe

Recently I was fortunate enough to travel to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, to surprise my brother Sam for his 23rd birthday. When we arrived we found him in the library making a spreadsheet for one of his classes. We walked up to him, tapped him on his shoulder, and he turned around. He was stunned. Smiling from ear to ear, I gave him the biggest hug, and I just couldn’t believe I was with him once again.

Carbs are not the bad guy. Really!

Carbs are not the bad guy. Really!

Carbs get a bad rap these days. Carbohydrates are our energy source. Not all carbs are created equally. When you eat whole grain carbohydrates, such as bulgur, brown rice, quinoa and kasha (also known as buckwheat groats), you stay satisfied much longer because whole grains take longer to break down in the body and thus provide energy longer.

Lessons from weeding: grassroots action

Lessons from weeding: grassroots action

I’m 47 years old and this month was the first time in my life that I’ve ever weeded a garden. While this might be surprising to many, as I am the newly appointed Food & Farm director at Philo Ridge Farm, I’ve spent the better part of my adult life on the social and culinary side of food and agriculture. Furthermore, other than my college years at UVM, I’ve spent my entire life in the city.

We celebrate this community-spirited generosity  – Thank you for the support this month from Michaela Ryan, farmer and founder of New Village Farm in Shelburne, who donated 50 pounds of ground beef.

Simple Summer Salads

Simple Summer Salads

School is almost out and June is just around the corner. The season of potlucks, barbecues and picnics is upon us. When “what can I bring?” was met with “how about a salad?” I used to silently protest. Salads are so…unglamorous. “How about a signature cocktail?” I would counter. “Oh. You can bring that too.”

“Light Shall Rise”

“Light Shall Rise”

I moved to Charlotte with my family at the end of August 2017 from Underhill, Vermont. Since moving, I have regularly experienced something that others in Charlotte may find familiar. Not every day, but definitely every week, when I tell someone that I live in Charlotte the response I get is some form of, “Oooh, Charloooootte!” (as eyebrows raise). Why?
