Over the years of The Charlotte News, the “Around Town” section has addressed issues that impact people and organizations of our community.
Although something we call community will likely exist, the COVID-19 pandemic will produce changes in how that community displays itself. As our representative Mike Yantachka noted in the last News issue, we are faced with the unexpected and have to “adapt our lifestyle quickly.”

Around Town – Nov. 28, 2018
Former Charlotte resident Erica Heilman created a podcast titled “Rumble Strip Vermont” five years ago, and through it she has gained a wide reputation. She currently is leading a seven-part series exploring the state of mental health care around us. Erica moderates the series with episodes using personal stories from inside the state’s mental health care system to look at a variety of topics, such as home environments, parenthood (particularly of adult sufferers living at home), the community, supervised housing such as “My Pad,” how it feels to get back to normal, the role of work in recovery.

On behalf of the board of directors and the staff of The Charlotte News, I want to express our deep sorrow at Alice’s death and our lasting appreciation for the extraordinary contributions she has made to the paper over the past decade.
Alice Davidson Outwater
In 1947, at the age of 17, Alice traveled to France with the Experiment in International Living on the S.S. Marine Tiger, a converted troop ship from WWII. She spent the summer as a counselor in southern France at a camp for boys whose fathers had been killed. Their assignment was to bring the boys back to health. The next year, she spent a summer hiking in Swedish Lapland and leading a climbing group near Annecy, France.
Susan Callis Raabe
Susan Callis Raabe died from pancreatic cancer on October 29th, peacefully at home and surrounded by family, exactly as she envisioned it. Susan was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. She graduated from Marymount College and Columbia School of Nursing. In 1965, while working in the coronary care unit at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Susan met a medical student named Daniel Raabe.
