CVU’s Jesse Klein joined Milton’s Chance Rose as High School All Americans as selected by the United Coaches Soccer Organization. Both were also among six Vermont players earning All Region honors. Jesse was joined on that squad by her teammate Josie Pecor.
Hailey Chase, Lena Ashooh, Sophia Stevens were named to the 26th annual Burlington Free Press All-State Field Hockey Team. Hailey was a senior forward.
This fall’s Redhawk athletes exhibited quite a mix of cheers and groans. Both soccer teams led the groans as the men lost to Essex in overtime in the Division I semi-finals and the top-ranked CVU women were upset by South Burlington with a late-game goal in the state finals to give the Wolves a 2-1 win.
CVU men golfers won their third straight Division I title on the Quechee course earlier this month. A team effort in which the four Redhawks shot in the 70s and low 80s with seven birdies among the group. Evan Forrest and Alex Leonard both struck the ball 78 times.
Champlain Valley Union High School partnered with Lewis Creek Association through its Ahead of the Storm program to actively improve water quality of stormwater running off the school property and flowing to Lake Champlain.

Cross-country runners, soccer and field hockey players, the new-style football teams all broke the practice ice recently. To look at CVU’s array of fields and the athletes preparing their skills on each one, a person may have thought nothing was affected by the pandemic.

With an indoor venue off the table and a global pandemic touching even the farthest corners of Vermont, Champlain Valley Union High School’s Class of 2020 had a graduation that was non-traditional and unexpected.
The Vermont High School Principals Association has canceled the current spring season sports due to the governor’s order for residents to stay home. The sports are baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, ultimate frisbee and unified basketball. The last state championship to be played was the March 11 Division I men’s hockey. Fall sports seasons have yet to be determined.
CVU class of 2020, as your class advisor I know this is not how you expected to finish the final leg of your senior year in your high school journey, in your lifelong journey. This was to be our year, and, with fingers crossed, we were going to make it the best. Ever.

200 wins and still going strong
CVU women’s basketball coach, Ute Otley, garnered her 200th win in 9 years of coaching the Redhawks.
Concentrating during a high school wrestling meet seems difficult. There are whistles blowing, coaches and fans shouting, bleachers packed with athletes and spectators, voices on a loudspeaker constantly blaring.
Nordic skiers double their efforts – This time of year Nordic skiers split their time between high school and New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) events, and some skiers participated in both. Most of the higher performing racers choose NENSA, which has four Eastern Cup races and one high school-specific State Race. The State Race was held in Rumford, Maine, on Feb. 8 and 9.

The Free Press’s women’s basketball team of the decade that recently listed individual players is somewhat of a misnomer, when in fact a true team of the decade is the Redhawk women’s basketball team under the tutelage of Ute Otley.
The Dec. 17 CVSD School Board meeting focused on the operations budget, the part of the budget that deals with maintenance, food service, transportation and technology services. This side of the budget also includes the management of the capital-needs budget.
Both men’s and women’s hockey teams stand at one win, one loss as of last Saturday. In their opening game on Wednesday, the CougarHawk women, a combined team with CVU and Mount Mansfield Union, could not find the net in a 10-0 loss to another combined team, Burlington/Colchester.
