I received my college’s magazine the other day, and one of its lead articles described the migration of many African American workers from the Deep South north to major cities and smaller towns for jobs there and for better futures than they were getting in the Jim Crow arena. Beloit, Wisconsin, happened to be a major destination because it contained a good-size foundry of Fairbanks Morse, a manufacturer of engines and, interestingly, a part of the same corporate enterprise as the Fairbanks Corporation of St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

to Henry and Lyla Bushey of Charlotte who earned recognition through the Good Citizen Challenge and what they accomplished in 2018. Their recognition became public at the Vermont Statehouse on March 27 when more than 70 student competitors for the honor gathered to be recognized.
to Courtney McDermott whose poem “Dublin” appeared in the Young Writers Project of the Burlington Free Press on August 10. In it the author wonders whether coming abroad was the right thing to do. She says she has never before felt lonely as she is sitting by herself in a café. She wonders whether she made a mistake but at the end of the poem makes her decision.
